Claude Moore Colonial Farm is adjacent to The Pavilions of Turkey Run.
Our guests receive free admission and can enjoy a stroll into the past
as part of their visit.
The Claude Moore Colonial Farm demonstrates the life of a poor family
living on a small farm in Northern Virginia during the late 1770's.
The Farm includes approximately 100 acres of land, twelve of which are
farmed with corn, tobacco, wheat, barley, flax, a kitchen garden and an
orchard. The fields are tilled, planted and cultivated by hand and guests
are encouraged to participate to get a "real feel of the times."
The farmer allows his livestock to roam freely, protecting valuable
crops with a split-rail fencing. The small log house is used as
the family dwelling, where meals are prepared over the hearth fire
from food raised on the Farm.
Clothing, furniture, tools and equipment used by the Farm
family are reproductions of 18th century artifacts.
Although they do not actually live here, the family works
the Farm as if it were their own. We hope that observing the family
at work will add to your knowledge and understanding of the world
of the poor farmer of the 1770's.
